Do I need to be fit to join?
No you don’t. We see people who are wanting to train to simply get fit or some who just love the sport. In every class you can go at your own pace.
Do I need experience to start?
We see people at all levels of experience. We have a lot of students that have never done any sort of martial arts before coming to Flow.
Is it safe?
Yes. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is different to other martial arts because there is no punching or kicking. Jiu Jitsu is a grappling sport, so most contact is done on the ground in close proximity to the other person. All classes including Muay Thai are supervised by a qualified and experienced instructor.
What are the classes like?
Our classes start off with a warm up which is essential for getting the heart rate going and preventing injury. Depending on which class you are attending Jiu Jitsu or Muay Thai, different techniques are taught and demonstrated throughout your session. All classes are planned beforehand and follow a structured syllabus set by the head instructors Paulo Polimeno and Ryan Creary. Students are then instructed to test their new skills with an opponent during the second half of the class.
Can I try a class before I sign up as a member?
Yes absolutely. We offer free 7 day trials for those wanting to really see what Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai is all about.
Who is your typical customer?
We see kids from as young as 3 and adults as old as 65. We see people of all ages and levels of experience. To get more specific, our ideal customer is someone who is open to learning, respectful, kind and a team player. Most things we are pretty laid back about but these things we don’t budge on. This is partly why Flow Martial Arts has established itself as an enjoyable, fun, sociable martial arts school.
Do women train?
Yep. We love our ladies. We have girls that like to roll with other females only and some who like challenging themselves with different partners.
What about children?
We see kids from the ages of 3 all the way up to adulthood. We have different classes for different age groups. Flow Turtles are around 4-7 years and Flow Sharks are from ages 8-15. All of our kids classes are supervised by our head instructors who are fully qualified and experienced in teaching with children.
What equipment do I need to bring?
Your gi, a drink bottle, a towel and a mouthguard if you prefer (recommended). If your just starting out gym gear is fine.
How long does it take to gain my next belt?
We hold gradings regularly at the gym. How quickly you reach the next level is entirely up to you. If you are training regularly, improving your skills, attending competitions, contributing in classes and helping others you will find you will have no problem gaining stripes and your next belt. It definitely does not happen overnight though. Martial arts is about patience, discipline and respect – it is earnt not given freely.
